Request for the removal of the customs duties on imports of all articles for use in the repair or overhaul of gas turbines

The Department of Finance is currently reviewing a request for the removal of the customs duties on imports of all articles for use in the repair or overhaul of gas turbines. Currently under tariff item No. 9945.00.00 articles and materials, wholly or in chief part of metal, for use in the manufacture of gas turbines, enter Canada duty-free.

The applicant claims that only “original equipment manufacture” articles are authorized to be used for such repair or overhaul, and that these are not available from Canadian production. Tariff relief would make the domestic repair/overhaul gas turbine industry more competitive with other countries.

Members with an interest in this request are asked to contact Paul Robichaud by October 24, 2008.
