The Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce conducted a study that shows trade at U.S. Canadian borders is down by over twenty percent. It's now asking president Barack Obama to help increase it….

The Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce, along with the Brookings Research Institute is asking president Barack Obama to improve trade between the U.S. and Canada.

"We need to clear out the underbrush of old problems. That means listening better and devoting resources to some of the problems that we have. Empower your port directors for customs, the local head of the FBI, the border patrol directors. So that they have the ability to work with local communities. Create a border pilot project pilot challenge fund. One that creates some federal money so that local communities with a great idea, like the enhanced drivers license have the money to devlop it, test it, measure it, see if it works and if it's a great idea spread it across the border."

Members from the Detroit Regional Chamber say the improvements in trade are essential to the local economy. …

Our Canadian neighbors also want to see trade improvements. "It's vital for Canada that our trading relationship with the United States is enhanced. I you look at maufacturing in Canada, over half of what's produced in Canada is shipped into or through the U.S. And two thirds of all the products used by manufacturing comes from the U.S."

Roughly 400 thousand individuals cross the U.S. Canadian border every day.
