Canada welcomes suspension of petition by United Steelworkers

April 28, 2016

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of International Trade, ...issued the following statement [on April 22 2016]:

“Yesterday, I spoke with Leo Gerard, United Steelworkers’ International President. I am pleased that the union has suspended its petition, under Section 201 of the U.S. Trade Act, calling for the United States to curb imports of aluminum.

“This is great news, and I applaud the union for taking this course of action. Canada is the main supplier of aluminum to the United States, and U.S. manufacturers depend on access to primary unwrought aluminum products from Canada for their operations.

“Canada and the United States enjoy the largest bilateral trading relationship in the world. We have well-developed supply chains that depend on the free flow of trade and the removal of barriers.”
