Certain Woven Polyester Canvas Fabric - Request to Eliminate Duty

The Department of Finance (DoF) is seeking your views on a request it has received to eliminate the duty on certain woven polyester canvas fabric for use in the manufacture of apparel. The DoF is proposing to add a duty-free tariff item to subheading 5515.12, which would read as follows:

5515.12.40 --- Plain woven fabric, from yarns of different colours, containing 70% or more by weight of polyester staple fibres in the weft, and 20% or more by weight of polyester filament yarns in the warp, of a weight not exceeding 140 g/m2, for use in the manufacture of apparel.

The products that would fall under the new tariff item are currently classified under tariff item No. 5515.12.90 and are dutiable at a rate of 14% under the Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) Tariff.

Members with an interest in this request are asked to provide feedback to Colleen Brock by July 31, 2009.
