D-98-08: Entry Requirements for Wood Packaging Material into Canada

July 9, 2012

CFIA have provided the 9th revision of CFIA Policy Directive D-98-08: Requirements for the Entry of Wood Packaging Material into Canada.

This revision has been undertaken to reflect the amendments made to the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM) 15 regarding approved treatments for debarked wood and marking requirements. In addition, the revision establishes specific import requirements for dunnage entering Canada aboard ships.

Wood packaging originating from the US remains exempt of import requirements as per current policy. Canada and the United States continue to discuss implementing the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM) 15. The date for full implementation has not been confirmed. Once the date has been confirmed by Canada and the United States, industry will be informed and a phase-in period of up to 18 months will begin.

Please note that this policy does not come into effect until August 7th, 2012.
