January 17, 2011

The following is a 14 January 2011 news release by DFAIT.

The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of International Trade, today concluded a two-day visit to Orlando, Florida, where he met with the state’s newly elected governor, Rick Scott, and promoted Canadian expertise in the construction and energy sectors.

“The Canada-U.S. trade and investment partnership is the strongest in the world,” said Minister Van Loan. “Canadian companies have a big stake in the U.S. economy and a key role to play as the United States continues to recover. Our partnership with Florida has created jobs on both sides of the border.”

In his meeting with Governor Scott, Minister Van Loan emphasized the importance of the Canada-U.S. and Canada-Florida relationships. The Minister also highlighted the necessity for Canada and the United States to build on the success of their trade and investment partnership as both countries focus on economic recovery, jobs and growth.

During his visit, Minister Van Loan opened the Canadian Pavilion at the International Builders’ Show in Orlando, the largest trade show in North America for suppliers to the residential building market. He also highlighted opportunities that exist for Canada in Florida’s energy sector.

“Canada is the United States’ largest supplier of crude oil, natural gas and electricity,” said the Minister. “Thirteen percent of Canada’s merchandise exports to Florida are in the energy sector. Our country’s innovation in this sector could help address more of Florida’s energy needs and create opportunities for Canadian businesses and workers.”

In 2009, Canadian exports to Florida were worth $4.1 billion, while daily merchandise trade between Canada and Florida reached nearly $19 million.
