Order In Council 85-2955, Courier Imports Remission Order

The following letter to Mike Tremblay in Calgary is from Ms. Joyce Stacey, Trade Services Officer in Revenue Canada's Prairie Region. Members with questions or comments on this issue may contact Ms. Stacey at 403-292-4329, or by fax at 403-292-4200.

This letter is being written further to a review of the above-noted Order-In-Council by the Compliance Verification Unit in Trade Administration Services.

The Order-In-Council provides for remission of the Customs duties and excise paid or payable on imported goods transported by courier and having a value for duty not exceeding CAN$20. The Compliance Verification Unit has confirmed that couriers/brokers are applying this OIC extensively against non-consolidated entries where the value for duty exceeds $20.

It would be appreciated if you would bring this concern to the attention of your members and request that they apply due diligence in the usage of this OIC.
