Requesting a Business Number

July 10, 2017

We have heard from members that there are times when CRA will not issue a Business Number (BN) to an importer. Refusal is usually based on the fact that the importer does not import often enough to warrant a BN.

The CSCB contacted CBSA to ask what action should be taken when a client is refused a BN. CBSA has responded that they have asked CRA to assign a BN when the importer is importing commercial goods, regardless of the frequency of their imports. A BN will not be assigned to a casual importer, defined as an importer who is not a business and who is importing goods for his own use.

CBSA has asked to be advised when clients who are importing commercial goods are unable to obtain a BN. Members may do this by forwarding details to Michelle Criger ([email protected]) at the CSCB.
