Traffic to U.S. resumes as temporary border crossing opens

The following is excerpted from the 14 July 2009 edition of “globeandmail.com”.

Armed border officers began work yesterday at a makeshift post in Eastern Ontario, allowing traffic to flow freely to and from the United States for the first time since a dispute between aboriginals and Ottawa erupted in May….

The temporary point of entry is rudimentary, consisting of tents and trailers. It has the capacity, however, to handle both initial vehicle inspections and more in-depth checks….

[Cornwall Mayor] Mr. Kilger called the reopening "a first step towards a larger, more permanent solution," one that will have to be hammered out between the federal government and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne….

While it's not known how long the makeshift border crossing will remain open, the CBSA said it is continuing to explore long-term solutions with Akwesasne officials.
