Update Regarding Russian Ban on Canadian Meat Imports and Testing Requirements

December 1, 2015

In 2014, Russia imposed a ban on the import of meat from Canada. According to the negotiated agreement with Russia, operators of establishments which are eligible to export to Russia must perform microbiological and chemical testing as per Annex H and Annex M.

Because it is unknown when the ban will be lifted, operators have the option to make a business decision as to whether or not to continue testing to meet the Russian requirements. Only meat products (beef, pork and poultry etc.) produced during testing periods (Annex M and Annex H) are eligible for export to Russia. If an operator decides to discontinue testing, any product produced during this period will be ineligible for export to Russia. Once the ban is lifted and export to Russia is again possible, any operator who decided to stop testing must perform testing as if this was an initial request in order to re-establish the standards for the establishment.

Note: Operators of establishments who plan to continue to export to Armenia, Kazakhstan and Belarus, must continue to meet Russian requirements. This means they must continue to test as per the requirements in Annex M and H.
