US Does Not Reinstate NEXUS Program

Quick restoration of the NEXUS program in Sarnia after the attacks of 11 September has been delayed. This US Customs program facilitates border crossing for business travellers. However, the Minister of National Revenue, Mr. Cauchon, met with US Customs Administrator Robert Bonner on 1 November regarding the NEXUS program and its Canadian equivalent, CanPass, and NEXUS will not be reinstated immediately. Rather, American officials continue to examine NEXUS in view of the more stringent security requirements demanded by the US administration.

About 130,000 frequent, low-risk cross-border travellers access the dedicated lanes devoted to NEXUS and CanPass users. CCRA officials are convinced that such programs allow Customs officers to concentrate their efforts on high-risk travellers and trade.

The issue of reinstating NEXUS will be reconsidered in the near future.
