U.S. WHTI – Chamber of Commerce Submission

Further to our message on July 6 (U.S. WHTI – Request for Comment), the following was excerpted from a message received at the CSCB, from the Chamber of Commerce, providing us with their submission on the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI).

While the NPRM does take some positive steps forward with some exceptions for children and the willingness of DHS to develop alternative documents (ie. enhanced drivers' licences) with interested parties, there are still numerous areas of concern. For instance, the NPRM proposes a summer 2008 implementation date, however, this does not leave enough time for the completion of an enhanced drivers licence pilot project or ensuring that a critical mass of WHTI-compliant documentation is available to the traveling public. Furthermore, there is no mention in the NPRM of a communications strategy to ensure that the public is aware of the upcoming WHTI rules.

The Chambers' submission is available on the CSCB website at: http://www.cscb.ca/listinfo/CoC_NPRMSubmission.pdf
