Proposal to amend tariff on certain fabrics used in the manufacture of Velcro

The following is a notice from Sean Clarke, International Trade Policy Division at the Department of Finance.

I am writing to seek your views on a request that the Department has received to eliminate the tariff on certain fabrics used in the manufacture of “hook and loop” fastening systems, more commonly referred to as Velcro®. We are proposing to add a tariff line breakout to subheading No. 5806.10. The proposed item would read as follows:

5806.10.92 ---- Narrow woven pile fabric consisting of nylon filament yarns with either a woven-in looped pile of nylon filaments or a woven-in pile consisting of loops cut part way up one side of nylon textile monofilaments

The products that would fall under the new tariff item are currently classified under tariff item No. 5806.10.99, dutiable at a rate of 14% under the Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) Tariff.

Members with an interest in this request are asked to contact Sean Clarke at [email protected], or (613) 996-5538 by 4 January 2008.
