Canada airports win approval for cargo transshipments

The following was reported on in 24 July 2008 edition of “Journal of Commerce”.

The Toronto Pearson International Airport, Canada’s largest for cargo and passengers, won approval Thursday to welcome any and all foreign carriers for transshipment of international air cargo.

The same approval was granted by the federal transport department to the international airport at Halifax, Nova Scotia, and the airport at Prince George, British Columbia, near the busy new container seaport at Prince Rupert.

Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon said the purpose of the approvals is to improve the flow of goods internationally, giving airports and regions an economic boost.

The program allows air cargo to be moved through Canada for shipment to third countries. Any foreign carrier can be authorized to use Toronto or other approved airports to transship international air cargo, even if Canada and the carrier’s country do not have an air transport agreement.

The program already is in effect at Montreal, Vancouver, and eight other cities.
