Update on the response received from the Russian authorities regarding the audit report submitted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency

The following notice to exporters of fish products from the Russian Federation was published by the CFIA on 30 December 2008.

Further to the Industry Notice "Update on the response from the Russian authorities regarding the audit report submitted by the CFIA" of December 17, 2008, please be advised that the CFIA has received additional information from the Russian authorities.

The Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (FSVPS) has indicated to the CFIA that as of January 1, 2009, only those establishments which provided information on contracts with Russian importers will be eligible to export fish products to Russia.

FSVPS clarified that the existing certificate will continue to be used for shipments destined for the Russian market in January 2009. However, a new export certificate with enhanced security features will be required, as of February 1, 2009, for Canadian fish and seafood products exported to Russia. CFIA will
continue to work with eligible establishments to ensure a smooth transition.

CFIA continues to work with FSVPS to establish a 2009 joint inspection schedule of eligible establishments.

In addition, FSVPS clarified that product from all establishments currently in transit and product that leaves Canada prior to December 31, 2008, destined for the Russian market, will be permitted entry into the Russian Federation.
