Request for Removal of Customs Duty on Hot-Rolled or Forged Stainless Steel Flat Bars

The Department of Finance has received a request for the removal of customs duty on certain sizes of hot-rolled or forged stainless steel flat bars for use in the manufacture of injection molds.

The chemical composition of the stainless steel bars in question is described as DIN 1.2085 (a sulphurized version of DIN 1.2316). Bar sizes with a thickness of 37 mm to 127 mm are hot-rolled products whereas those with a thickness of 137 mm to 257 mm are produced from forged plates. The hot-rolled bars are classified under tariff item No. 7222.19.00 of the Customs Tariff and are subject to a five per cent MFN rate of duty. The forged bars are classified under tariff item No. 7222.30.00 and are subject to a six per cent MFN rate of duty. The applicant has informed the Department that the bars of the required composition and dimensions are not available from Canadian production.

Members with an interest in this matter should contact Mr. Dean Steadman in the International Trade Policy Division at the Department of Finance by 21 May 1999. Mr. Steadman can be reached by telephone at 613-947-4508 or by fax at 613-992-6761.
