US Targets Beef and Pork for Tariff Retaliation against the European Union

American trade officials said on 19 July that pork, beef and other foods from the European Union (EU) would be targetted for retaliatory duties as a result of Brussels' refusal to allow imports of US beef from cattle treated with growth hormones. As noted in a message regarding Canadian retaliatory measures sent on 13 July, Canada is also considering the range of EU products on which it will impose tariffs, and will requesting authority to retaliate from the WTO Dispute Settlement Body on 26 July 1999.

The US Trade Representative's office in Washington said 100 per cent duties will be imposed against cattle and pork from EU nations as part of a total $116.8 (USD) million in annual retaliatory tariffs. Other foods targetted include truffles, Roquefort cheese, goose liver, roasted chicory and prepared mustard. These tariffs will go into effect on 29 July.
