Request for Removal of Certain Carbide Inserts

The Department of Finance has received a request for the removal of the customs duties on certain carbide inserts for use in Canadian manufactures.

The goods in question are described as "pressed inserts" incorporating a "chip control geometry". The applicant has informed the Department that these inserts are not available from Canadian production and has suggested that the removal of the duty on these goods would assist to improve the competitiveness of affected Canadian manufacturers by reducing their operating costs. The pressed inserts are classified under tariff item 8209.00.92 of the Customs Tariff and are subject to a nine per cent Most-Favoured-Nation rate of duty.
