Request for Removal of Tariff on Electric Motors used in the Manufacture of Portable Mortar Mixers

The Department of Finance is seeking views on a request they have received for removal of the tariff on 1/3 hp, 115 volt electric motors for use in the manufacture of portable mortar mixers.

These motors are designed to stall and trip the thermal protection device when it jams or overloads.

The product is classified under tariff item No. 8501.40.29 and is dutiable at eight per cent under the Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) tariff.

The applicant claims that this product is not available from Canadian sources, and that tariff relief would assist it to compete more effectively.

Members with an interest in this request should contact Ms. Shezara Ali 613-992-4418, or by fax at 613-992-6761, by 15 March 2002.
