Request for Removal of Customs Duty on AC Electric Motors

The Department of Finance is currently reviewing a request for the removal of the customs duty on AC electric motors of an output not exceeding 37.5 W for use in the
manufacture of dehumidifiers. These motors are classified under tariff item No. 8501.10.99 of the Customs Tariff, and are dutiable at 6% under the Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) Tariff, and at 3% if imported under the General Preferential Tariff (GPT).

The applicant claims that these AC electric motors are not available from Canadian production, and that tariff relief would enhance its competitiveness in both the domestic
and export markets.

Members with an interest in this request, or are aware of others who could potentially be affected by such action should contact Mr. Paul Robichaud of the International Trade Policy Division at 613-992-2510, by fax at 613-992-6761 or via e-mail at [email protected] by 8 April 2003.
