Transport Minister Releases Statement regarding Heightened Security of Canada’s Transportation System

Transport Minister David Collenette released the following statement regarding heightened security of Canada’s transportation system on 19 March:

“Since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Canada has been operating in a heightened security environment. Canada has always had a strong transportation security system. Immediately following those events, the Government of Canada introduced many improvements to further enhance the system. We continue to take concerted action to ensure the ongoing effectiveness of Canada’s transportation security system.

“Officials at Transport Canada are working with representatives of the transportation industry, including airlines, airport operators, railways, the trucking industry and operators of marine facilities to keep them informed of the evolving situation and to discuss security-related issues.

“Transport Canada is in close contact with other government departments and agencies and with our U.S. counterparts. Further security measures have been developed and will be implemented based on our ongoing assessment of the security situation.

“We will put in place, as appropriate, more stringent security measures including more visible policing, additional security around pre-board screening of passengers and cargo, and tighter access controls. These measures will be introduced in aviation, marine, rail and surface transportation facilities and at border crossings.

“In these times of heightened tensions, I would like to remind all passengers to exercise extra vigilance, regardless of the means of transportation they use. Stringent security measures are in place and will be strictly enforced.”
