Commissioner Bonner addresses the Halifax Shared Border Accord Meeting

The following is a press release issued on the Customs & Border Protection web site, at http://www.customs.gov/xp/cgov/newsroom/highlights/halifax.xml.

On April 23, 2003, Commissioner Bonner [of US Customs & Border Protection] attended the Shared Border Accord Meeting with his Canadian counterparts, Commissioner Rob Wright of the Customs and Canada Revenue Agency and Commissioner Michel Dorais of Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Commissioner Bonner expressed how pleased he was with the successes that the SBA program has achieved. These achievements include the recently signed agreement to improve rail security along the Northern Border and an agreement to exchange NAFTA-related information. He also discussed the status of such programs as NEXUS and FAST, information exchanges, and other types of cooperation among the agencies, and acknowledged the need to continue dialogue to assure that we continue a successful collaboration to achieve our goals.

The Commissioner also took an opportunity to talk about the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and, specifically, about the new Customs and Border Protection (CBP). He outlined the CBP structure and mission and explained the various immigration, and agricultural responsibilities that CBP is charged with. He emphasized that together we would continue to work with Canada on initiatives that facilitate the processing of people at the border and look for further opportunities to expand our capabilities and effectiveness in achieving our mutual goals.
