Business leaders want improved security for better trade, says poll

The following article is excerpted from the 13 April 2004 edition of “Canadian Transportation & Logistics”.

A COMPAS Inc. poll conducted for the Financial Post reports that more than 85% of Canadian business leaders want improved domestic anti-terrorism tactics, as well as careful monitoring of visitors and immigrants, as the key to an open-trade border.

And a majority of the business leaders also said a Canadian military commitment to the U.S.-led war in Iraq would be beneficial to improving trade, says the Financial Post.

The poll also noted 91 % of respondents said Ottawa should make trade relations with the U.S. its No. 1 priority. When the same poll question was posed in 2002, 86% of respondents said access to U.S. markets should be the federal government's main concern.

Prime Minister Paul Martin is expected to address trade issues such as softwood lumber and Mad Cow on a trip to Washington on April 30, his first meeting with George W. Bush….

The Internet-based survey was conducted between April 6-8 and is considered accurate to within 7.9 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
