Port of Montreal containers having insufficient documentation

The following message was sent from CN’s International Market division in the Customer Support Centre on 18 October.

As you may be aware, railcars are continuing to be loaded at the Port of Montreal with containers having insufficient documentation. In some instances, there is no billing at all, and is only being discovered once traffic has been released from pier locations. This is creating potential regulatory and safety issues.

For this reason, CN instructed the Ocean Terminals at the Port of Montreal to suspend all loading of U.S. destined cargo, until such time that a viable solution can be developed, that will ensure only validated cargo is loaded to rail. This instruction was issued during the past weekend.

We hope to have a solution by tomorrow [ie 19 October].
