US Customs, Border Protection extends FAST card enforcement deadline to May 1

The following article is excerpted from “Canadian Transportation & Logistics” on 28 January 2005.

A new US security requirement that would have seen trucks turned around at some Canada-US border crossings starting Monday has been postponed to allow government agencies more time to process a huge backlog in driver security screening applications.

In a statement issued today, US Customs & Border Protection (CBP) announced that it will not commence full enforcement of a US Trade Act requirement that would have prevented drivers using a popular line release program - Border Release Advance Screening and Selectivity, or BRASS, from entering the United States unless they were in possession of a … FAST driver identification card. The deadline has been extended to May 1, 2005, and until that time drivers not in possession of a valid FAST card will receive … warnings.
