April trade data expected to show gains for both imports and exports

Canada's trade surplus is expected to widen in April to $4.4-billion, from $4.2-billion in March, predicted BMO Nesbitt Burns economist Douglas Porter. But the widening trade surplus doesn't mean that the "underlying trend" toward narrowing Canada's trade surplus has been curbed, he said in a note published last week…. Exports in April should rise 1% on healthy commodity prices and a soft Canadian dollar, he said. Imports are also expected to climb, gaining 0.7% on "solid domestic demand." The merchandise trade data, to be released Friday, should "offer a more upbeat message for the economy," ….
