Ontario Company Fined $3,000 for Offences Under the Meat Inspection Act
This news release was issued by the CFIA on 27 November, and is available on their web site at:
A conviction was registered against Gourmet Sausage Inc. in Provincial Court in Newmarket, Ontario on October 27, 2006, resulting in a $3,000.00 fine. The fine was the result of Gourmet Sausage’s guilty plea to one count to an offence under the Meat Inspection Act.
In May 2005, Gourmet Sausage Inc. applied a mark that so closely resembled the Meat Inspection Legend as to likely be mistaken for it. This action is contrary to Section 6.(a) of the Meat Inspection Act. Gourmet Sausage Inc. is not a federally registered meat establishment and therefore is prohibited from using the federal legend.
The Meat Inspection Act establishes the Meat Inspection Legend as a national trademark and establishes control over its use. Unauthorized use of the Meat inspection Legend is subject to prosecution under the Act.
