Request to Eliminate Duty on “Light” and “Heavy” Microfibre Fabrics for the Manufacture of Bedding Products

The Department of Finance received a request to eliminate the duty on “light” and “heavy” microfibre for use in the manufacture of bedding products. The proposal is to add a tariff line breakout to subheading No. 5515.12 that would read as follows:

5515.12.20

n       plain woven fabric of 100 per cent non-textured yarns, containing 60 per cent by weight of non-textured yarns of polyester staple fibres in the weft and 40 per cent by weight of non-textured yarns of polyester filament in the warp, brushed or napped, bleached, dyed or printed, weighing between 50 g/m2 and 70 g/m2,  for use in the manufacture of bedding products.

The fabrics that would fall under the new tariff items are currently classified under tariff item No. 5515.12.90 and are dutiable at a rate of  14 per cent under the MFN Tariff.

Members with an interest in this request should contact Sean Clarke by 9 June 2007, at 613.996.5538, or by e-mail at [email protected].
