Close to 300,000 vacant jobs – small businesses face biggest recruiting challenges

Canadian businesses continue to struggle to attract and retain the staff they need. CFIB’s latest Help Wanted report, for Q1 2013, shows that 2.5% of private sector job postings remain unfilled. This represents 295,000 jobs across Canada.

Although the problem is most acute among smaller firms (4.2% for companies with fewer than 19 employees) the federal government has announced immigration changes that will make it even harder for small businesses to find the staff they need.

Vacancy rates also vary by sector and by province, with the construction sector (3.6%) and Saskatchewan (3.9%) facing the biggest challenges...
