This notification is to inform stakeholders of the release of the final version of the ENERGY STAR Downlights Version 1.0 specification. The Version 1.0 specification came into effect November 16, 2023. To receive a French translation of this specification or any technical specification, please email [email protected].
This specification was developed through a process that included two draft specifications and a final draft specification, a webinar, with input from various stakeholders. Comments and questions from stakeholders on the final draft of the specification were addressed in the final version. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) received a formal letter of support on the final draft from two industry associations (jointly). Stakeholder comments, previous drafts of the specification, and related supporting materials are posted to www.energystar.gov/luminaires.
The following are minor revisions made in the final specification:
- Single- and multi-head monopoint accent lights were added to the excluded products list in Section 1.2 and an example photo was added in Annex A. This product is essentially the same category as track lights but was not explicitly called out before.
- Two definitions were modified (one definition was added, and one definition was removed) in Section 4:
- The “Accent Light” definition was replaced by “Recessed Accent Light” to better clarify the difference between included recessed adjustable accent lights and excluded single- and multi-head monopoint accent lights.
- A definition of "Communication Link” was added.
- The “Input Power” definition was modified slightly.
- The “LED Light Engine” definition and all references to light engines in other sections were removed since a complete unit of the representative model must be tested.
- The requirement for testing and reporting color tunable and multi-output models at the default white light setting have been removed from Section 5.1. This data is no longer pertinent, as with the new approach the participant is responsible for representing a product certification only at the most consumptive setting. Therefore, only in the case where the default is the most consumptive setting would its performance be reported.
- To further aid in understanding the new approach and provide all relevant requirements for establishing a product family’s tested representative model in Section 6.1, EPA carried over language from Section 12.1 on thermal management. “Downlight retrofit kit must be tested in the worst-case thermal condition for which it is rated per ANSI/UL1598C-2014” and “recessed downlight retrofit kits must be tested in the worst-case thermal environment that the product is rated for per ANSI/UL1598C-2014.”
- The Start time test method was updated to include ANSI/IES LM-79-19.
- Step Dimming was removed from Section 15.1 for products marketed as dimmable since continuous dimming is required.
While retesting is not required for Version 1.0, based on the new approach to product groupings or “families” (going from least efficient to most consumptive), participants may benefit from doing additional testing to submit a new representative tested model to optimize their product family listings. Specifically for color tunable models certified to Luminaires V2.2, participants should work with their certification body to leverage existing test data to the greatest extent possible since the variation between the least efficient setting and most consumptive may be negligible for certain criteria. Finally, to provide a better understanding of the new approach to product certification, EPA included an example of an allowable product family in Section 6 of the specification.

Publication de la version finale de la spécification technique ENERGY STAR version 1.0 relative aux plafonniers encastrés
Le présent avis vise à informer les intervenants de la publication de la version finale de la spécification technique ENERGY STAR version 1.0 relative aux plafonniers encastrés (en anglais seulement). La spécification est entrée en vigueur le 16 novembre 2023. Cette spécification a été élaborée dans le cadre d’un processus comprenant deux ébauches de la spécification et une ébauche finale, un webinaire, avec des contributions de la part de divers intervenants. Les commentaires et les questions des intervenants sur l’ébauche finale de la spécification ont été pris en compte dans la version finale. La Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) a reçu une lettre officielle de soutien à l’ébauche finale de la part de deux associations industrielles (conjointement). Les commentaires des intervenants, les versions précédentes de la spécification et les documents connexes sont affichés à www.energystar.gov/luminaires (en anglais seulement).
Les révisions mineures apportées à la spécification finale sont les suivantes :
- Le plafonnier d’accentuation monopoint à une ou plusieurs têtes a été ajouté à la liste des produits exclus à la section 1.2 et une photo d’exemple a été ajoutée à l’annexe A. Ce produit appartient essentiellement à la même catégorie que les luminaires sur rail, mais il n’était pas explicitement mentionné auparavant.
- Deux définitions ont été modifiées (une définition a été ajoutée et une autre a été supprimée) dans la section 4 :
- La définition de « Accent Light » (plafonnier d’accentuation) a été remplacée par « Recessed Accent Light » (plafonnier d’accentuation encastré) afin de mieux clarifier la différence entre les plafonniers d’accentuation réglables encastrés inclus et les plafonniers d’accentuation monopoints à une ou plusieurs têtes exclus.
- Une définition de la « Communication Link » (la liaison de communication) a été ajoutée.
- La définition de la « Input Power » (la puissance d’entrée) a été modifiée.
- La définition du « LED Light Engine » (moteur DEL) et toutes les références aux moteurs dans d’autres sections ont été supprimées étant donné qu’une unité complète du modèle représentatif doit être mise à l’essai.
- L’exigence relative aux essais et à l’établissement de rapports relatifs aux modèles réglables en couleur et à sorties multiples au réglage par défaut de la lumière blanche a été supprimée de la section 5.1. Ces données ne sont plus pertinentes, car avec la nouvelle approche, le participant est responsable de la représentation de l’homologation d’un produit uniquement au réglage auquel la consommation est la plus élevée. Par conséquent, seul le réglage par défaut présentant la consommation la plus élevée verrait son rendement indiqué.
- Pour faciliter la compréhension de la nouvelle approche et fournir toutes les exigences pertinentes pour l’établissement du modèle représentatif mis à l’essai d’une famille de produits dans la section 6.1, l’EPA a repris le libellé de la section 12.1 sur la gestion thermique. « Downlight retrofit kit must be tested in the worst-case thermal condition for which it is rated per ANSI/UL1598C-2014 » (L’ensemble de rénovation de plafonniers encastrés doit être mis à l’essai dans les conditions thermiques les plus défavorables pour lesquelles il est évalué conformément à la norme ANSI/UL1598C-2014) et « recessed downlight retrofit kits must be tested in the worst-case thermal environment that the product is rated for per ANSI/UL1598C-2014 » (les ensembles de rénovation de plafonniers encastrés doivent être mis à l’essai dans l’environnement thermique le plus défavorable pour lequel le produit est évalué conformément à la norme ANSI/UL1598C-2014).
- La méthode d’essai à heure de début a été mise à jour pour inclure la norme ANSI/IES LM-79-19.
- « Step Dimming » (La gradation progressive) a été supprimée de la section 15.1 pour les produits commercialisés comme gradables, étant donné qu’une gradation continue est requise.
Bien qu’il ne soit pas nécessaire de refaire les essais pour la version 1.0, compte tenu de la nouvelle approche des groupes ou « familles » de produits (du moins efficace au plus énergivore), les participants peuvent avoir intérêt à effectuer des essais supplémentaires pour présenter un nouveau modèle représentatif mis à l’essai afin d’optimiser leurs listes de familles de produits. En ce qui concerne les modèles à couleur réglable homologués selon la norme des luminaires V2.2, les participants devraient collaborer avec leur organisme d’homologation pour exploiter au maximum les données d’essai existantes, car l’écart entre le réglage le moins efficace et le plus énergivore peut être négligeable pour certains critères. Enfin, pour mieux faire comprendre la nouvelle approche relative à l’homologation des produits, l’EPA a inclus un exemple de famille de produits autorisés dans la section 6 de la spécification.

L’EPA organisera un webinaire le mardi 5 décembre 2023, à 14 h HNE, afin de présenter un aperçu des principaux changements entre les normes des luminaires version 2.2 et des plafonniers encastrés version 1.0. Inscrivez-vous ici pour y assister. Les participants peuvent maintenant commencer à travailler avec leur organisme d’homologation reconnu par l’EPA pour homologuer leurs produits admissibles aux exigences de la version 1.0 des plafonniers encastrés.
