Customs Export Reporting System (CERS) and the BN Identifier

Implementation of the new Customs Export Reporting System (CERS) will commence in spring of 2020. In preparation for data migration, CBSA and Statistics Canada (StatCan) have advised the CSCB that they have found that a significant number of Business Numbers are invalid or the RM identifier has not been activated for export purposes. CBSA and StatCan are in the process of notifying non-compliant commercial exporters by letter.

In order to facilitate enrolment in CERS, a valid BN with an activated RM account identifier is required. To apply for a BN or to activate the program identifier for export, please visit the CRA website. A valid BN with an activated account identifier will be required in order to export.

Ensuring that your clients have a valid BN account number activated for export will facilitate a smoother CERS registration process.
