Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has issued the following communiqué regarding revised qualifying criteria for gas and oil furnaces. The new criteria will come into effect on February 1st, 2013.
This is a reminder about the new reporting requirements for both oil and gas/propane fired furnaces as of February 1st, 2013. This is a continuation of the Version 3.0 technical specification that came into effect on February 1st, 2012, which had a requirement for Furnace Fan Efficiency (e).
In order for a furnace to be ENERGY STAR qualified under Version 4.0, it will need to meet the new requirement for Air Leakage (Qleak).
ENERGY STAR Gas and Oil Furnace Requirements
| Product Type | Regions | AFUE | Furnace Fan Efficiency (e) | Air Leakage (Qleak) |
| Gas Furnace | Canada | ≥ 95.0% | ≤ 2.0% | ≤ 2.0% |
| Oil Furnace | Canada | ≥ 85.0% |
For further information, please consult the ENERGY STAR Version 4.0 Technical Specification on the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s website at energystar.gov, which will outline all mandatory reporting requirements.
