The importation and manufacture of off-road small spark-ignition engines in Canada is regulated under the Off-Road Small Spark-Ignition Engine Emission Regulations. These engines are typically found in lawn and garden machines such as hedge trimmers, brush cutters, lawnmowers, garden tractors, leaf blowers, ice augers and snow blowers; in light-duty industrial machines such as generator sets, welders and pressure washers; and in light-duty logging machines such as chainsaws, log splitters and industrial shredders.
The latest regulatory amendments require companies to submit a signed importation declaration to Environment and Climate Change Canada when importing 50 engines or more in a calendar year, no later than February 1 of the following calendar year. Thus, all small spark-ignition products imported in 2018 must be declared before February 1st, 2019; if they have not been declared through the Canada Border Services Agency's Single Window Initiative.
