North America surface transportation trade up 6.2% in November

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Trade using surface transportation between Canada, the US and Mexico, rose 6.2% in November compared to November 2011, totalling $81.5 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the US Department of Transportation.

BTS reported that in November, $56.2 billion of US trade with Canada and Mexico moved by truck, $14.9 billion moved by rail, and $5.9 billion moved by pipeline. Surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico accounted for 21% of total US foreign trade in November.

US-Canada surface trade was $46.7 billion in November, with Michigan leading all states at $6.6 billion. The top commodity category transported between the US and Canada by surface modes of transportation in November was vehicles and parts, valued at $9.6 billion.
