The CFIA has recently been notified of a detection of Perkinsus olseni (a reportable disease in Canada) in New Zealand in a new susceptible species of molluscs, Perna canaliculus (New Zealand Green lipped mussel).
As a result of this disease detection, the CFIA will be changing the release recommendation to Refuse Entry for the following HS-OGD Codes.
030731670221 Perna canaliculus - TSN 567088 - Mussel (live or non-ready-to-eat, shell on) (fresh or chilled)
030739670221 Perna canaliculus - TSN 567088 - Mussel (non-ready-to-eat, shell on) (other)
All live and both shells intact Perna canaliculus (New Zealand Green lipped mussel) will be refused entry into Canada for all end uses.
As per international standards, half shell products of Perna canaliculus (New Zealand Green lipped mussel) are considered a safe commodity and do not require an aquatic animal health permit or aquatic animal health export certification from New Zealand. Provided that importers are properly declaring the HS Codes for half shell products, trade in this commodity should not be impacted. In order to minimize impacts on importers of half shell Perna canaliculus (New Zealand Green lipped mussel), this commodity should be declared under the following HS-OGD Codes:
