The Department of Finance is currently reviewing a request for the removal of the customs duties on imports fixed and sliding railway bumping posts and friction buffer stops. These devices prevent or mitigate the effects of an overrun by a train. These posts and stops are classified under tariff item No. 8608.00.90 of the Customs Tariff as railway or tramway fixtures and fittings, dutiable at 6.5% under the Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) Tariff, and Free under the General Preferential Tariff (GPT).
The applicant claims that fixed and sliding railway bumping posts and friction buffer stops are not available from Canadian production and that tariff relief would enhance its competitiveness in the domestic and export markets.
If you have an interest in this request, or are aware of others who could potentially be affected by such action, I would appreciate receiving your views by January 16, 2013.
