The Department of Finance is currently reviewing a request for the removal of the customs duties on imports of lead-acid accumulators for use in the manufacture of smoke, fire, or gas detection and fire systems, including power supply panels and modules therefore. These lead-acid accumulators are classified under tariff item No. 8507.20.90 of the Customs Tariff as other lead-acid accumulators, dutiable at 7% under the Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) Tariff and the General Preferential Tariff (GPT).
The applicant claims that these lead-acid accumulators are not available from Canadian production and that tariff relief would enhance its competitiveness in the domestic and export markets.
If you have an interest in this request, or are aware of others who could potentially be affected by such action, I would appreciate receiving your views by January 18, 2013.
