Request for the Removal of the Customs Duties on Imports of Steel Fibres...

The Department of Finance is currently reviewing a request for the removal of the customs duties on imports steel fibres for use in the manufacture of reinforced concrete structures.  These goods are inserted into preset concrete for the purpose of replacing rebar.  These fibres are classified under tariff item No. 7326.20.00 of the Customs Tariff as articles of iron or steel wire, dutiable at 6.5% under the Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) Tariff.

The applicant claims that steel fibres for use in the manufacture of reinforced concrete structures are not available from Canadian production and that tariff relief would enhance its competitiveness in the domestic market.

If you have an interest in this request, or are aware of others who could potentially be affected by such action, I would appreciate receiving your views by August 2, 2013.
