In an effort to prevent its introduction and spread into Canada, spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula, Hemiptera: Fulgoridae) has been regulated by the CFIA since 2018. It can feed on more than 100 species of trees and plants. It is not known to be present in Canada, but poses a significant threat to the grape, tree fruit, wine and ornamental nursery industries. Early detection activities would make managing the pest easier due to the discovery of this insect in the United States and the volume of articles potentially carrying the insect arriving from Asia. It can be distinguished from all other native and naturalized insects (such as planthoppers, moths) in Canada by its unique colouration.
The CFIA asks industry and the public that if they believe they have detected the Spotted Lanternfly in Canada, to kill and remove the pest in a secure container and contact their local CFIA office immediately.
