Changes to AMPS

Further to our message of November 12 regarding changes to AMPS, several members have contacted us for clarification. The following may be helpful to all. 1. Penalties assessed under contraventions C080 - C083 and C350 - C353 are the same: $150.00 for the first infraction with a maximum penalty amount of $5,000.00. 2. Penalties are assessed per error or per occurrence.

Registration Types; Fruits & Vegetables Requirements

Effective December 1, 2010, CFIA will require imports of fresh fruits and vegetables to indicate either the Federal Produce Licence Number or the DRC Membership Number. The registration codes for these, and for the signatory of the California Leafy Green Products Handler Marketing Agreement A (Alpha-numeric) and the Name of SENASICA certified grower/packer A (Alpha-numeric), have now been provided.

Casual Importations of Vehicles - Update

Further to our message of November 8 where CBSA clarified the requirement for a NAFTA Certificate of Origin for vehicles imported from the United States, CBSA has now provided additional information regarding vehicles from Mexico. The CSCB had also asked for confirmation that the requirement for a NAFTA Certificate of Origin applies to all commercial importations, and not just vehicles imported by a dealer. Please keep in mind that the following continues to apply only to those vehicles that are not part of a commercial importation. From CBSA

Canada, India begin free trade talks

The following is from the 12 November 2010 edition of www.cbc.ca. Canada and India have entered formal discussions for a comprehensive free trade pact. In Seoul, South Korea, for the G20 summit, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that negotiations for an agreement that could be worth as much as $6 billion a year to both countries has begun.

Changes to AMPS

At the 2010 CSCB Conference in September, there was a joint CSCB-CBSA session on Compliance at the Border. The presentation for that session included changes to AMPS that had been discussed at a bilateral meeting between the CSCB and CBSA.

Canada’s trade deficit nears record

The following is excerpted from the 10 November 2010 edition of “theglobeandmail.com”. An unexpected surge in Canada’s trade deficit is dragging on Canada’s already sluggish economy. The country’s trade deficit neared a record in September as exports fell, prompting several economists to predict that the sagging trade picture will knock three percentage points off third-quarter growth – a similar magnitude as in the second quarter.

Canada announces long-range vessel tracking measures

Government of Canada announces long-range vessel tracking measures will further improve safety and security at sea The following is a 10 November 2010 news release by Transport Canada. The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced new regulations to further improve marine safety and security. The Long-Range Identification and Tracking of Vessels Regulations enable Canada to better track vessels bound for Canadian ports and to monitor Canadian vessels internationally.
