EICS: Civic Holiday

Monday 2 August is a statutory holiday, and the Bureau's offices will be closed (no officers or Help Desk staff will be available). The EICS and EXCOL systems will be available during normal hours. Please note that the Help Desk email ONLY will be monitored on Monday the 2nd between 08:00 - 16:00 (EST) for urgent messages.

CBSA Message: Civic Holiday

The following message is from CBSA (EDI10-069). Please note that the Electronic Commerce Unit's office will be closed for the Civic Holiday on Monday August 2, 2010. Systems operations and accounting procedures for the Civic Holiday Monday, August 2, 2010 will be as follows: CADEX reports will run the evenings of Friday, July 30, 2010 and Monday, August 2, 2010. The exchange rates from Saturday, July 31, 2010 through Tuesday, August 3, 2010 (inclusive) will remain unchanged.

CFIA Message: Meat Import Control and Data Information Centre Relocation

The following is to inform you that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) Meat Import Control and Data Information Centre (MICDIC) is moving on Saturday July 31st and Sunday August 1st. Service is expected to resume as scheduled on Monday, August 2, 2010. MICDIC provides meat pre-clearance for US origin meat. The Centre is the contact to obtain the inspection notice for US meat after the load enters Canada. The contact information will remain the same:

Third Party Certification for General Service Lamps

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is following up on its stated intent to address compliance verification requirements for general service lamps before the 2012 minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) come into effect. They are proposing that general service lamps be third party energy efficiency verified when they become subject to their respective 2012 MEPS. Global earnings drive C$ to 5-week high

The following is excerpted from today's edition of "ca.reuters.com". The Canadian dollar rose against its U.S. counterpart on Tuesday, climbing to a five-week high after upbeat corporate earnings from both sides of the Atlantic whetted investor appetite for riskier assets. The currency touched C$1.0256 to the U.S. dollar, or 97.50 U.S. cents, its strongest level since June 22.

Port of Montreal lockout to end Saturday

The following is from today's edition of "montrealgazette.com". Longshoremen will return to work Saturday morning at the Port of Montreal, ending a lockout that has idled Canada's second largest port since Monday. Union president Daniel Tremblay said his members voted unanimously Friday to accept the back-to-work protocol negotiated with the help of a federal mediator Thursday night. Both the union, representing about 850 longshoremen and women, and the employer have agreed to stop pressure tactics and to begin intensive contract negotiations.

WTO report calls for more cooperation among governments in natural resource trade

Trading in natural resources creates a great many challenges both for importing and exporting countries and governments need to cooperate more intensively if these challenges are to be adequately addressed, according to WTO economists. Director-General Pascal Lamy said: “I believe not only that there is room for mutually beneficial negotiating trade-offs that encompass natural resources trade, but also that a failure to address these issues could be a recipe for growing tension in international trade relations”.
