Notice in Interested Parties - Proposed Regulation of MDPV

A Notice to Interested Parties (Notice) regarding the following substances was published in the Canada Gazette, Part I (CGI) on June 9, 2012: methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), namely 3,4-methylenedioxypyrovalerone and its salts, derivatives, isomers and analogues and salts of derivatives, isomers and analogues This Notice communicates Health Canada's intent to include MDPV in Schedule I to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA). Korea, U.S. Partner on Mutual Trusted Traveler Programs

The U.S. and Korea today formally announced a reciprocal agreement for expedited processing of arriving international airline passengers. June 2012 BCCC Meeting Highlights

Members of the BCCC had been hoping that its June meeting would feature widely anticipated details about progress on elements of the Border Action Plan. Unfortunately the level of detail provided on most items fell short of what business needs to do any substantive planning for operational change. Nonetheless, the discussions were as always interesting. Here are some highlights.

Leading Indicator of Industry Profitability: June 2012

The following is excerpted from a June 2012 report by The Conference Board of Canada. The monthly Leading Indicator of Industry Profitability is constructed from high frequency data series. The indicators are designed to be predictive of movements in corporate profitability six months hence. An industry leading index is created for the economy as a whole, as well as for 49 individual sectors within the economy, thus providing coverage for most of the private business activity that takes place in Canada. Jordan trade bill expected to pass before summer - but not Panama

Harper mum on campaign for second bridge to Detroit

The following is excerpted from the 12 June 2012 edition of The Globe and Mail. Canada has reached an accord with Michigan’s governor to build a second bridge between Windsor and Detroit, sources say – another step forward in a decade-long battle by Ottawa to broaden the biggest conduit for two-way trade with the United States. About 25 per cent of the goods Canada and the U.S. sell to each other in any given year cross over the existing Ambassador Bridge between Ontario and Michigan.

Government of Canada Restores Market Access for Canadian Beef to Peru

The following is excerpted from an 11 June 2012 news release by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Canadian beef producers will benefit from newly restored market access to Peru, Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and International Trade Minister Ed Fast announced today. Effective immediately, the Peruvian market has been reopened for Canadian bone-in beef under 30 months of age, boneless beef of all ages, and offal.

Canada-EU trade deal: It’s time to make the hard choices

The following is excerpted from the 12 June 2012 edition of The Globe and Mail. The first big test for Prime Minister Harper’s ambitious trade negotiations agenda will come late this year with the expected climax of the negotiations between Canada and the EU. The outcome will determine the credibility of the government’s trade agenda. EU negotiators were in Ottawa last week to tackle some of the remaining issues and we are fast approaching the time for hard choices about its final content.

Ritz: 'disconnect' between Obama administration and US 'trade bureaucrats' on Trans-Pacific talks

Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz says there appears to be a "disconnect" within the United States government on Canada's possible entry into the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade talks. About seven months after the Harper government said it wanted to join the TPP, Canada's top agriculture official says he is still waiting for the US, along with Australia and New Zealand, to officially accept Canada's bid.
