CIFFA Special eBulletin - Immediate Impacts of Hanjin Financial Difficulties

CN Rail Holding Hanjin Cargo During a 24 Hour Pause

Today it was announced that Hanjin restructuring has fallen through. Read the Bloomberg article here.

Subsequently, CN Rail has 'put a 24 hour pause' on all Hanjin containers and is waiting for further information from Hanjin. We understand this to mean that containers that are on the train are being moved but that additional Hanjin containers are not being loaded to rail. We have also learned from member firms that CN terminals are not releasing inbound Hanjin containers and that drivers trying to retrieve Hanjin containers are being turned away from CN. During this 'pause' period, CN has advised it will not assess additional storage due to their decision.

CIFFA strongly urges CN to reconsider this decision and to allow pick-up of Hanjin containers that have been released to move from the rail to waiting customers.

The situation is fluid at the moment and no one knows exactly what the next days will bring. There are questions of what happens to other CKYH Alliance carrier's cargo on Hanjin vessels and of Hanjin cargo on other carrier's vessels.

CIFFA is seeking advice from legal counsel as to the rights and responsibilities of all parties in this type of situation and will inform members as we learn more.

Please inform customers of this situation and of the possible consequences.

CIFFA Special eBulletin - Update #2 Impacts of Hanjin Financial Difficulties - CN Rail

Last night CIFFA received the following update from CN Rail.

"Based on announcements made earlier today by the Korea Development Bank and other creditors regarding Hanjin Shipping, CN made decisions regarding the movements of Hanjin controlled and billed containers in CN terminals.

As of 10:00 PM Eastern tonight, [Tuesday August 30] CN will take the following actions to protect the best interest of both the customers and our business.

All Hanjin import containers will be released for pickup.   This includes Hanjin containers on ground at CN inland terminals as well as containers currently moving on the CN network to CN destination terminals.  There will be no storage charges for these boxes.  All Hanjin export units currently at CN inland terminals will not be loaded onto trains and can be picked up from the CN origin terminal.   There will be no storage charges for these boxes.

CN will not accept any additional Hanjin export loads at our inland terminals going forward and at this point until further notice, will not accept any bookings from other steamship lines destined for Hanjin owned vessels."
