Brown Marmorated Stink Bug [BMSB] - Canadians exporting to Australia

The CSCB has learned of a recent change that will impact certain exports to Australia.  Our thanks to our Australian CTCS designate for alerting us to this change.

The Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources [DAWR] has identified Canada amongst 23 nations requiring a seasonal measure for Brown Marmorated Stink Bug [BMSB] for certain goods manufactured in, or shipped from Canada as sea cargo between September 1, 2019 to May 31, 2020 inclusively.

Goods identified by tariff classification as “target high risk goods” will require mandatory treatment for BMSB.  Goods identified as “target risk goods” will not require mandatory treatment for BMSB however they will be subject to random inspections.

There are three approved methods of treating goods for BMSB:

  • Heat treatment
  • Methyl bromide fumigation and
  • Sulfuryl fluoride fumigation.

All BMSB treatment providers in target risk countries must first register and be approved by the DAWR.  Treatments conducted by an unapproved treatment provider in a target risk country will not be recognised as valid and the goods will be subject to onshore treatment (if permitted), or be directed for export.

More information, including the list of goods is available on the Australian DAWR website. http://www.agriculture.gov.au/import/before/brown-marmorated-stink-bugs#safeguarding-arrangements
