Canadian Food Inspection Agency takes further action to protect Canadians from Salmonella linked to pistachios from Iran

On December 2, 2025, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced new measures to protect Canadians from the risk of Salmonella infection associated with pistachios from Iran.

Since September 27, 2025, Canada has temporarily banned the import of pistachios and pistachio-containing products from Iran due to a Salmonella outbreak, with 155 confirmed infections linked to these products. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has implemented strict measures, including targeted testing, recalls, and mandatory holding and testing of Iranian pistachios imported before the ban to ensure consumer safety. These requirements apply to businesses with a Safe Food for Canadians licence and will remain in place during the ongoing investigation led by the Public Health Agency of Canada. The CFIA continues inspections to verify compliance, warning that non-compliant importers and manufacturers may face penalties, licence suspension or cancellation, or prosecution.
