Comments published for proposed Valuation for Duty regulatory amendments

The government has published the comments it received on proposed amendments to the Valuation for Duty Regulations.

A total of 431 comments were received from the CSCB and other associations, importers and private individuals, with concerns covering a number of key themes:

  • The proposed amendments will not meet their stated objectives;
  • The changes would negatively impact Canadian small businesses and other resident importers;
  • The amendments would increase costs to the Canadian economy, which would outweigh the additional duties collected; and
  • The changes create uncertainty and a lack of predictability for importers, making compliance difficult.

As reported previously, the CBSA has stated that it will continue to review all comments and take them into consideration for any further amendments to the proposal.
