EU votes in favor of creating world’s largest free-trade area with Mercosur

Representatives of the European Union’s (EU) member states voted in favor of a free trade agreement with the Mercosur bloc, formed by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, approving a long‑negotiated free trade agreement and clearing a major hurdle toward creating the world’s largest free‑trade area, covering more than 715 million people. The deal, endorsed after 26 years of negotiations, still requires ratification by all national parliaments in both the EU and Mercosur. Its passage was secured when Italy shifted to support the agreement, preventing opponents from forming a blocking minority. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to travel to Asunción to sign the treaty as Paraguay currently holds Mercosur’s rotating presidency.
