Federal Government Cabinet Shuffle

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a significant change in his Cabinet, including 30 updates to key Ministry positions and the reorganization of some portfolios. Some of the key changes that may be of interest to Members are:

  • Dominic Leblanc becomes Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs, replacing Marco Mendicino.
  • Anita Anand becomes President of the Treasury Board, replacing Mona Fortier.
  • Marie-Claude Bibeau becomes Minister of National Revenue (responsible for the Canada Revenue Agency), replacing Diane Lebouthillier.
  • Pablo Rodriguez becomes Minister of Transport, replacing Omar Alghabra.
  • Harjit S. Sajjan becomes President of the King’s privy Council, Minister for Emergency Preparedness (replacing Bill Blair), and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada.
  • Marc Miller becomes Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, replacing Sean Fraser.
  • The labour portfolio has been reorganized, with Randy Boissonnault becoming Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages, while Seamus O’Regan Jr. retains a portion of the portfolio to become the Minister of Labour and Seniors.
  • The trade portfolio has also been reorganized, with Mary Ng retaining responsibility as Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, and Rechie Valdez becoming the Minister of Small Business.

Several key ministers retained their portfolios, including Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry François-Philippe Champagne, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly.
