Health Canada Consultation: Proposed new requirements for lithium-ion batteries and consumer products containing lithium-ion batteries under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act

Opened on December 2, 2025 and will close to new input on February 14, 2026.

The purpose of this consultation is to inform interested parties that Health Canada is seeking comments on a proposed regulatory initiative that would introduce mandatory requirements for lithium-ion batteries and consumer products containing lithium-ion batteries under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA).

Goals of the consultation

Health Canada will use the input received through this pre-consultation to inform next steps, which may include a cost-benefit analysis of the proposal and future consultations. Any future regulatory proposal would be pre-published in the Canada Gazette, Part I for further stakeholder consultation in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's Cabinet Directive on Regulation.
