Labour action underway and planned for Canadian, US eastern ports

Tonight at midnight, strike action is set to begin for the US East Coast and the 85,000 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), following today’s three-day strike action at two ports in Montreal by the CUPE Local 375 union at Viau and Maisonneuve.

The US ILA strike will affect 36 major ports, impacting approximately:

  • 70% of all containerised US exports, and
  • 56% of US imports (valued ~$588bn in 2023).

Montreal’s Viau and Maisonneuve will stay closed until Thursday October 3, 2024, at 6.59am. The 300+ workers at those two ports handle around 40% of goods (~ 6 million tonnes) moving through the Port of Montreal. https://montrealgazette.com/news/local-news/longshoremen-at-port-of-montreal-launch-72-hour-strike
